Elon Musk is challenging federal workers with a bold email asking them to justify their jobs. His message created quite a stir among government employees, sparking confusion and conflict within the ranks of Trump’s administration.

Despite Musk insisting it was a necessity, agencies quickly reassured their staff that participation was totally voluntary. For example, the Department of Health and Human Services told its employees that not responding would have no negative consequences for their jobs.

However, Musk’s request didn’t just stop. He indicated that employees who ignored his email by the deadline would face termination, turning up the pressure on federal workers. His comments hinted at frustration: “The email request was utterly trivial… Yet so many failed even that inane test,” he tweeted, expressing his dissatisfaction with noncompliance.

This back-and-forth created unease among the roughly 2.3 million federal employees, leaving many unsure about what to do.

In a rare display of dissent within Trump’s cabinet, officials expressed their discomfort with an outsider like Musk being involved in their personnel matters. There was also concern that employees might accidentally share sensitive information in their responses to Musk’s requests.

Across departments, responses varied. While some leaders and the Office of Personnel Management insisted that responding was essential, others stressed that employees should not feel obligated to share their work activities outside of their usual chains of command.
