Wasted Food in the Industry
My son works in the food industry, and it was eye-opening to see how much food gets thrown away. In every place he’s worked, unsold food just ends up in the trash. It’s surprising to realize that this happens at almost every restaurant or food shop.

Some Exceptions
Not all businesses waste food. Some will let employees buy unprepared food at a discount before it expires. Others donate non-perishable items to those in need.
Teams Making a Change
That’s why I’m thrilled that our Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx are stepping up to help. Executive Chef David Fhima and Senior Executive Chef Jason Steidle work together to ensure that food prepared for games is not wasted.
When food goes unsold, it’s packaged into small containers and donated to Youthlink in Minneapolis.
About Youthlink
Youthlink does fantastic work by serving over 100,000 meals a year. The CEO, Rich Melzer, shared how they help the most vulnerable young adults in the Twin Cities. He emphasized that the partnership not only saves resources but also builds a supportive community.
“We nourish them with high-quality food that they might not find elsewhere, showing them they are loved,” Melzer said.
At every home game, they donate about 175 pounds of food. Since starting this program last season, they have already donated an impressive 7 tons of food.
