Transforming Indian Railways: A Deep Dive into Modernization Initiatives – CII Blog

Indian Railways is a vital part of India’s transport system. It plays a key role in the country’s growth and modernization. This year, Indian Railways reached an impressive milestone by upgrading over 23,000 kilometers of tracks. This upgrade allows trains to run at speeds of up to 130 kilometers per hour. It shows a strong commitment to improving railway services and supporting India’s economic progress.

The recent budget for 2025-26 allocated ₹2.52 lakh crore for Indian Railways, marking a 3.9% increase over the previous year. Since the railway budget merged with the General Budget in 2017, it has received less focus. The new budget will primarily go towards modernizing tracks, enhancing safety, adding more routes for the popular Vande Bharat Express, and improving passenger facilities.

To support these improvements, several important steps are underway:

• New Trains and Coaches: The introduction of 17 new pairs of Vande Bharat trains and the production of 228 coaches between April and October 2024 are noteworthy developments.
• Infrastructure Projects: Indian Railways has commissioned 91 Gati Shakti multi-modal cargo terminals and completed 17 projects worth ₹16,434 crore under public-private partnerships.
• Renewable Energy Goals: Indian Railways aims for 30 GW of renewable energy by 2029-30, working toward a Net Zero goal by 2070. So far, they’ve installed 375 MW of solar and 103 MW of wind energy.
• Passenger Experience Enhancements: Several projects are designed to improve comfort and safety. For example:
• Amrit Bharat Station Scheme: This project redevelops railway stations to offer a better experience for travelers.
• Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras: These centers provide affordable medications and healthcare services at railway stations.
• One Station One Product Scheme: This initiative supports local artisans by helping them sell their goods at approximately 1,900 stations.
• Modern Signaling Systems: Indian Railways is replacing outdated mechanical signals with advanced electrical systems for improved safety and efficiency.
• Kavach: This automated train protection system helps prevent accidents.
• Automatic Block Signaling: This new system increases capacity on busy routes and prevents rear-end collisions.

While progress is significant, Indian Railways must continue to evolve. Future efforts should focus on creating modern infrastructure, reducing travel times, and increasing freight capacity. Greater private sector involvement is essential, especially in developing logistics and customized solutions for e-commerce.

To become a greener railway system, achieving 100% electrification of the broad-gauge network is crucial. Embracing technology will also enhance decision-making, productivity, and sustainable practices.
