A team from the Edmonds Food Bank took part in Hunger Action Day in Olympia. Over 200 advocates from around Washington gathered to push for better food security. The Edmonds team met with lawmakers to discuss important policies aimed at fighting hunger and helping those in need.
Key topics included:
- Free school meals for all children
- Ongoing support for food banks
- Funding for senior nutrition programs
- Support for SNAP fruit and vegetable incentives
- Continued funding for SUN Bucks to reduce child hunger in the summer
Casey Davis, director of the Edmonds Food Bank, stressed the need to protect vulnerable community members during tough economic times.
The team also underscored the importance of the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA). This agency supplies fresh produce to the food bank weekly. Moreover, SNAP, as the largest anti-hunger program in the nation, plays a critical role in supporting families.
Tracey Peterson, who oversees SNAP at Edmonds markets, shared insights about the program’s benefits. “Every year, we see hundreds of customers using SNAP’s Market Match program, which helps them double their EBT dollars for fresh produce. This program supports both our local farmers and our customers,” she explained.
The Edmonds Food Bank staff also reached out to several state representatives and senators, including a conversation with Rep. Strom Peterson about these key issues.
In addition to state policies, the team advocated for funding support for a new Edmonds Food Bank facility, known as Thrive Together: A Capital Campaign. Rep. Peterson has submitted a funding request for this initiative.
