A jury in Joliet, Illinois, convicted landlord Joseph Czuba of murder and hate crime on Friday. The case involved a shocking attack on a Palestinian American family, resulting in the death of a 6-year-old boy.
On October 14, 2023, Czuba, 73, fatally stabbed Wadee Alfayoumi and injured his mother, Hanan Shaheen. They were renting rooms in Czuba’s house in Plainfield, about 40 miles from Chicago. Authorities believe the attack was motivated by the family’s Islamic faith and the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas that reignited on October 7, 2023.
The jury deliberated for under 90 minutes, reflecting the unsettling resurgence of anti-Muslim sentiments in the Chicago area, particularly within its Palestinian community. The trial featured testimonies from police, medical personnel, and Shaheen, who vividly recounted the assault while her son was in another room. Tragically, Wadee was found with multiple stab wounds, including a knife still embedded in him.
Prosecutors presented graphic evidence, including photos of the crime scene and a knife holder that Czuba allegedly used. Some of this evidence was so explicit that screens displaying it were turned away from the victim’s family during the proceedings.
During the opening statements, prosecutor Michael Fitzgerald emphasized the horror of the crime, noting, “If it wasn’t enough that this defendant killed that little boy, he left the knife in the little boy’s body.”
Czuba pleaded not guilty, facing multiple charges, including murder and aggravated battery. His defense team argued that key evidence was missing. Czuba’s ex-wife testified but acknowledged only one outburst during their long marriage, claiming he often carried knives for practical purposes.
Shaheen’s testimony was crucial. She recounted their peaceful two-year stay in Czuba’s home, explaining that the situation turned hostile after the conflict began. Czuba informed her that they needed to move out because he believed Muslims were not welcome. He later confronted her violently, stating, “You, as a Muslim, must die.” Shaheen suffered multiple stab wounds and took weeks to heal, while Wadee unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
When police arrived, they found Czuba outside, covered in blood. Meanwhile, civil lawsuits regarding Wadee’s death have been filed, including one from his father, Odai Alfayoumi, who was not living with them at the time.
This case has received widespread media attention in the context of increasing hostility towards Muslims and Palestinians in the U.S. following the resurgence of conflict in the Middle East. The U.S. Department of Justice has also opened a federal investigation into hate crimes related to this incident.
