During an intense meeting in the Oval Office, President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a heated discussion. Observing this was Ukrainian Ambassador Oksana Markarova, who looked visibly distressed, with her head in her hand.
Trump questioned Zelenskyy about his reluctance to agree to a ceasefire with Russia, stating, “You’re saying you don’t want a ceasefire. I want a ceasefire because you get a ceasefire faster than an agreement.” In response, Zelenskyy pointed out the need for guarantees to ensure the safety of his people, saying, “Ask our people about [a] ceasefire, [about] what they think.” Trump abruptly interrupted the conversation, insisting, “That wasn’t with me.”
This disagreement escalated when Vice President JD Vance admonished Zelenskyy for questioning U.S. policy in front of reporters, calling it disrespectful. He asked, “Do you think that it’s respectful to come into the Oval Office of the United States and attack the administration that is trying to prevent the destruction of your country?”
Before the meeting, tensions were already high. Zelenskyy had rejected a deal concerning Ukraine’s rare earth minerals due to the lack of security guarantees against further Russian aggression. His refusal to sign the agreement displeased Trump and Vance, which likely fueled the argument.
As the meeting unfolded, reporters were taken by surprise when it ended abruptly, and Zelenskyy was escorted out of the White House. Shortly afterward, Trump took to social media, stating that Zelenskyy wasn’t ready for peace as he believed U.S. involvement gave him an advantage in negotiations. He expressed his desire for peace instead. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy acknowledged America’s support and emphasized Ukraine’s goal of a just and lasting peace.
Markarova has been in the spotlight since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Recently, there were calls for her dismissal from some members of Congress. House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized her for allegedly organizing a politically charged tour for Zelenskyy that excluded Republicans, claiming it was an attempt at “election interference.” Johnson urged for her removal from her position, suggesting that the incident undermined the trust necessary for effective diplomacy.
