Inside Gene Hackman’s Health Struggles: Friends Reveal Concerns While His Wife Betsy Arakawa Remains Fit

Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their New Mexico home, prompting friends to discuss their declining health. Longtime friends Daniel and Barbara Lenihan shared that Hackman, 95, had been “home-bound” and seemed to be struggling in recent months.

Barbara noticed he had stopped riding his bike about a year ago. Meanwhile, his wife Betsy, at 65, worked hard to keep Hackman active and engaged. Her son, Aaron, mentioned that Betsy did her best to ensure her husband remained healthy.

Betsy was also described as being “in perfect health” and was careful, especially during the COVID pandemic, making sure to wear a mask when out. Doug Lanham, another friend, noted that she maintained a strict diet for Hackman.

Leslie Hackman, one of their three children, stated that her father was in good shape, participating in Pilates and yoga regularly. However, she also hinted that her father’s memory was fading in a recent interview.

In addition to memory issues, it appears Hackman had a heart condition and was using a pacemaker. Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza shared that the device recorded an event on February 17, just nine days before they were discovered.

More details about Betsy’s health remain unclear. A housekeeper revealed that Betsy had not reached out to her mother, who is battling dementia, in months, which raised concerns among those close to her.

Authorities found Betsy dead in a bathroom, with pills scattered on a countertop. While officials could not disclose specific details about the medications due to privacy laws, it is known that several other medications were found in the home, including Tylenol and a thyroid medication.

The couple’s official cause of death is yet to be determined, pending autopsy results. Early reports indicated no signs of trauma or carbon monoxide poisoning, alleviating some concerns that family members had about foul play.

Police have stated there were no indications of criminal activity at the scene. While one dog was found dead in a closet, the couple’s other two dogs were safe in a different part of the house. A preliminary evaluation suggested the deceased dog may have suffered from dehydration.

In summary, the circumstances surrounding Gene and Betsy’s deaths remain under investigation, with officials maintaining that foul play is unlikely.
