The meet kicked off with the Compulsory Event. Morgan scored 35.250, just behind LIU’s 36.100. But the Bears bounced back in Pyramid Heat 3, clinching victory with a notable score of 9.600.
In the Acro Event, the Bears had to make quick adjustments due to an injury. Sophomore Malay Stubbs stepped up in Heat 3, showcasing her talent and adaptability on the mat. Her performance was critical, as teammate Olivia Phillip pointed out, emphasizing the importance of the moment for Stubbs, especially with online audiences watching.
By halftime, the score was tight: LIU led 90.300 to Morgan’s 89.850. The Bears maintained their momentum, earning consistent scores of 9.650 in both Heat 2 and Heat 3.
However, head coach Regina Smith felt frustrated with the team’s second-half performance. “It’s disappointing,” she said after the meet. “We should have secured this win. We seem to lose our edge in the second half.” Her concern highlights a challenge the team needs to overcome.
In Heat 3, LIU faced a setback with a fall, which led to a score drop to 8.250. Morgan took advantage, winning that part of the event with a score of 28.800 compared to LIU’s 27.450.
Unfortunately, LIU rebounded in the Toss Event, finishing with 26.950 over Morgan’s 25.750.
The Tumbling Event saw some impressive individual performances from the Bears. Morgan scored 46.550, yet LIU extended their lead with a score of 49.900. In the Quad Tumbling Pass, the Bears earned 8.350, while junior A’lycia Moore made her mark with a strong return, scoring 9.100 in her first Aerial Pass since injury.
Moore shared her experience, saying, “I really had to trust myself amidst the crowd. It felt fantastic.” Her determination shone through her performance.
In the Team Routine, the Bears gave it their all but fell short, with LIU finishing at 74.970 and Morgan at 73.270.
LIU took the overall win with a score of 242.120 to Morgan’s 238.070.
Looking ahead, Coach Smith is determined to make improvements. “We need to go back to the drawing board to ensure future wins,” she stated.
Despite the loss, the Bears displayed resilience and potential in their home opener. They are set to return to Hill Field House on Sunday, March 9, 2025, at 3 p.m. to compete against Presbyterian College.
