Narwhals are fascinating and mysterious creatures, known for their long, spiral tusks, which are actually elongated teeth. Recent research has provided us with rare footage of narwhals in their natural habitat, revealing how they use these tusks in surprising ways.

Scientists from Florida Atlantic University and Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans worked with Inuit communities in Nunavut, using drones to film narwhals up close. This footage has shown at least 17 different behaviors, some of which had never been seen before.

One of the most interesting findings is the way narwhals interact with other animals. They’ve been observed chasing large fish like Arctic char and using their tusks to hit and stun them. They also use their tusks to fend off seabirds, such as glaucous gulls, that try to steal their catch.

Greg O’Corry-Crowe, a senior study author and research professor at Florida Atlantic University, noted that the footage shows narwhals chasing fish and using their tusks not just for hunting, but also for communicating with each other. Some interactions seemed competitive, with one narwhal blocking another’s attempt to catch a fish, while others appeared to be friendly.

Notably, narwhals also probe the water and objects around them with their tusks, showing impressive skill. The researchers suggest that these tusks might help narwhals detect changes in their environment, such as water temperature and salinity, which could aid in finding food.

In a playful display, some narwhals interacted with a fish without trying to eat it. They nudged and examined it out of curiosity, highlighting that they may engage in playful behavior too. This opens up the idea that narwhals have unique personalities, as they seem to use their tusks in different ways.

O’Corry-Crowe explained that narwhals have a behavior called “tusking” where they raise and cross their tusks in the water. This might be a ritual to assess rivals or show off to potential mates. However, this new research reveals that their tusks serve many purposes: foraging, exploration, and even play.

As the Arctic continues to warm, understanding how narwhals adapt to their changing environment is crucial for their survival. The tusks, once thought to have a single purpose, are now understood to be versatile tools. With the aid of technology and collaboration, scientists are just beginning to unlock the secrets of these incredible whales.
