Deebo Samuel’s Wish Fulfilled: 49ers Trade Star Receiver to Washington Commanders for Draft Pick

Deebo Samuel has made a significant impact on the 49ers over six seasons, ranking high in their receiving yards. He’s also known for his ability to break tackles, often delivering in crucial moments. However, instead of returning for a seventh season, he is set to be traded to the Washington Commanders for a fifth-round draft pick.

This trade can officially take place from March 12, when the new league year begins. The 49ers have a strong track record with fifth-round picks under coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch. They chose Samuel in the second round of the 2019 draft, and he played a key role in their playoff journeys, except for last season when the team struggled with a 6-11 record.

At 29, Samuel will impact the 49ers’ salary cap with a hefty $31 million charge for 2025. He has one more season left on his contract, with a non-guaranteed salary of $17.5 million, and he is likely looking for a better deal in Washington.

The 49ers have made heavy investments in their roster, including a big contract for receiver Brandon Aiyuk and drafting Ricky Pearsall in the first round. This leaves Samuel without a new contract this year. After the trade news broke, he shared a heartfelt message to 49ers fans on social media, reminiscing about his draft day experience.

Samuel had made a trade request earlier, discussing it with Coach Shanahan after the last season. Lynch acknowledged their agreement with Samuel, expressing his reluctance to lose such a talented player while understanding his desire for a new start.

Throughout his career, Samuel has scored 22 receiving touchdowns and 20 rushing touchdowns over 81 regular-season games. However, he had a tough season last year, dealing with health issues that limited his performance. Known for his clutch plays, he shined in playoff games, including memorable moments against the Cowboys and Packers. In 2023, he was pivotal in a playoff victory over the Eagles.

Moving to Washington might be a fresh opportunity for Samuel. He joins a strong offensive unit led by rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and Pro Bowl receiver Terry McLaurin. Plus, he reunites with Commanders GM Adam Peters, who was with the 49ers when Samuel was drafted.

In 2021, Samuel had an All-Pro season, racking up impressive stats and helping the 49ers reach the NFC championship. After signing a three-year extension, his performance dipped, and this past season marked his lowest yardage total in a full year.

As both parties look ahead, this trade could be beneficial for Samuel and the 49ers alike, allowing each to focus on their future goals.
