NAIROBI, Kenya – On March 3, Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale met with Henk Jan Bakker, the Netherlands Ambassador to Kenya. They discussed climate action and preparations for the upcoming Dutch royal visit.
The conversation focused on improving sustainable forest management, a vital part of Kenya’s ambitious 15 Billion Tree Growing initiative. Both leaders agreed on the significance of the Financing Locally Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) program. This initiative, backed by the World Bank, aims to enhance climate resilience across the country.
The meeting also covered plans for the visit of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, which is scheduled for March 18–20, 2025. During their stay, the royals will join a tree-planting event in Thogoto Forest, where they will plant 2,000 trees with the local community.
CS Duale updated Ambassador Bakker on Kenya’s developing carbon markets. He also shared news about changes to the Climate Change Act and preparations for the Africa Climate Summit (ACS2), set for September 2025.
The relationship between Kenya and the Netherlands is strong, especially in agriculture, logistics, and sustainable development. These partnerships support Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which prioritizes environmental care and economic progress.
The meeting included key officials like Chief Conservator of Forests Alex Lemarkoko and Administration Secretaries John Elungata (Environment & Climate Change) and Evans Mutari (Forestry).
