A magnitude 3.9 earthquake shook Hollywood just as the stars were celebrating the Oscars. The quake’s epicenter was in North Hollywood, close to the Dolby Theatre where the ceremony took place.
The tremor hit around 10 PM local time, as many celebrities were arriving at the Vanity Fair afterparty. Witnesses described a sudden jolt, with some people screaming and buildings swaying like they were made of jelly.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake was felt across a wide area of Los Angeles. Thankfully, there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, and a tsunami alert was not issued. The Los Angeles Fire Department noted that while the earthquake was felt throughout downtown, they weren’t activating their emergency protocols.
This quake is part of a series of similar events in Southern California. Since the beginning of March, around 40 small earthquakes have occurred, though most were too minor to be widely felt. Just last month, a magnitude 3.7 quake struck near Malibu. In December, a much stronger quake, registering at 7.0, rocked northern California, prompting a brief tsunami warning for parts of the coast.
During the Oscars, BBC correspondents reported intense shaking, causing some panic among the attendees. One local resident said it was the strongest quake she had ever felt and expressed her surprise that it was only a 3.9. “I felt that in my bones,” she said.
Emma Vardy from the BBC was in the middle of retouching her makeup when the earthquake hit. She noticed her diamond earrings shaking and realized the building was moving. “I’ve felt many quakes in Los Angeles, but this was different,” she said. “Being on the 15th floor and feeling the building sway was quite an experience.”
