Google is introducing a new feature called “AI Mode” to make searching easier and more interactive. This experimental tool aims to compete with popular platforms like Perplexity AI and ChatGPT Search. It allows users to ask detailed questions and get more in-depth answers right from Google Search.
AI Mode will first be available for Google One AI Premium subscribers this week. Users can access it through Search Labs, which is Google’s channel for testing new features.
This feature uses a special version of Gemini 2.0 and is great for questions that require thorough analysis or comparisons. For example, you might ask: “What’s the difference in sleep tracking features between a smart ring, smartwatch, and tracking mat?”
AI Mode would respond with a detailed comparison of those items, along with links to articles with more information. You could even ask follow-up questions like: “What happens to your heart rate during deep sleep?” to keep the conversation going.
Previously, users had to ask several questions to get detailed comparisons or understand new concepts. With AI Mode, you not only get access to web content but also real-time information from sources like the Knowledge Graph and extensive product data.
Robby Stein, VP of Product at Google Search, mentioned that tests show people are asking longer questions and engaging more with follow-ups. This suggests that users are interested in diving deeper into complex topics, which is exactly what AI Mode aims to support.
Stein also noted that feedback about AI Overviews—another feature that provides quick information—showed that users wanted even more AI-enhanced responses for their searches. Hence, the introduction of AI Mode.
AI Mode uses a method called “query fan-out,” which runs several related searches at the same time across different data sources to gather and present cohesive answers.
Stein emphasized that the model focuses on providing accurate information and includes verification for sensitive topics. If it isn’t sure, it might share links instead, ensuring users find the right answers. While it strives for accuracy, he acknowledges that mistakes can still happen with any new AI technology.
As this is just the start, Google plans to improve the user experience and add more visual content in the future. They are also training the tool to know when to include links, images, or videos based on users’ queries.
Google One AI Premium subscribers can try AI Mode by opting into Search Labs, inputting a question in the Search bar, and selecting the “AI Mode” tab, or by visiting google.com/aimode. Mobile users can use the Google app to find the “AI Mode” icon below the Search bar.
In today’s announcement, Google also revealed updates to Gemini 2.0 for AI Overviews, improving its capability to assist with complex questions like coding and advanced math. Additionally, users now don’t need to sign in for AI Overviews, and the feature is also being made available to teens.
