How Modern Technology is Essential in Combating Today’s Threats

Modern warfare is changing fast, thanks to technology. To stay strong and effective, our defense system must look closely at academic projects in areas like Space Technology, Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Robotics, and more. Air Vice Marshal Dhananjay V. Khot (Retd) emphasized this at the ICONS 2025 event at IIT Bombay, where military experts and researchers gathered to share insights and innovations.

During the event, former army chief Gen M Pandey (Retd) pointed out that with today’s challenges, just securing borders isn’t enough. He stressed that we must also defend against rising cyber threats, including hacking and malware. To tackle these issues, he called for more research and advanced testing facilities.

AVM Khot reinforced this need by discussing the Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA) and India’s efforts in research and development (R&D). He mentioned that the Indian Army has a clear ‘Road Map’ that emphasizes the importance of increasing the R&D budget, sharing resources, and speeding up approvals for joint civilian and military technology initiatives.

ICONS 2025 also featured seminars on topics like Integrated Image Analysis for Target Identification and Geo-Spatial Technology for Military Operations. IIT Bombay has been instrumental in several important defense projects, including developing high-frequency X-ray power sources, improving naval equipment, creating reliability analyzer software, and working on smart drones and mobility systems.

Professor Sachin Patwardhan, Dean of R&D at IIT Bombay, and Professor M Atre, Deputy Director (Academics, Research & Translation), announced plans to work with the DRDO on over a thousand projects. The two-day seminar aimed to promote dialogue and knowledge sharing among IIT professors, policymakers, and military personnel, focusing on the emerging security threats that our nation faces.

This collaboration reflects a promising future for defense technology in India, emphasizing the need for continuous innovation and teamwork to address evolving challenges.
