Celebrate Earth Hour with WWF South Africa

South Africa (06 March 2025) – Last year, South Africa shone brightly in the global Earth Hour event, ranking in the top 10 for participation.

This year, WWF South Africa wants to take it up a notch! On March 22, 2025, the organization invites everyone to join in for Earth Hour, a time to unite for nature and commit at least 60 minutes to action.

Since it began in 2007, Earth Hour has been a chance for people around the world to come together and raise awareness about urgent environmental issues.

Pedzi Gozo, Executive Manager of Strategic Communications at WWF South Africa, emphasizes the importance of collective effort. “When we act together, we can make a real difference in addressing the challenges of biodiversity loss and climate change,” Gozo shares.

Getting involved is easy and fun! One exciting option is to sign up for Earth Hour, where you can win great prizes, including a weekend getaway with AfriCamps.

WWF South Africa will also host two primary events at the beautiful Kirstenbosch and Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens. These celebrations will kick off at 6 pm, with a screening of the family-friendly movie Happy Feet starting at 8 pm.

To reach even more communities, WWF will organize free movie screenings in rural and township areas from March 15 to 31. These events will blend entertainment with important environmental education, promoting awareness in underserved locations.

For those who prefer to create their own celebration, there are plenty of planet-friendly activities to choose from! You can set up tree-planting events, join a plogging group (jogging while picking up trash), host a nature-inspired yoga session, or organize a zero-waste picnic.
