Prime Video is diving into the Viking saga with a new series called Bloodaxe. This historical drama is created, written, and produced by Michael Hirst and his son Horatio Hirst, the talented duo behind the acclaimed series Vikings.
Bloodaxe tells the gripping story of Erik Bloodaxe, a legendary Viking warrior, and his fierce wife, Gunnhild, known as the Mother of Kings. As they navigate the treacherous fight for Norway’s throne, they face rivals, betrayals, and shifting loyalties. The kingdom is on the brink of war, drawing in powerful kings from neighboring lands and even a formidable English ruler. This new saga promises to be an epic tale filled with action, drama, and magic.
While Bloodaxe shares a creative background with the previous Vikings series and its Netflix sequel Vikings: Valhalla, it’s a fresh story set in a different timeline. It unfolds decades after the original Vikings series and just before Valhalla, bringing new characters to introduce to audiences.
Alongside Michael and Horatio Hirst, the production team includes Steve Stark and veterans from the Vikings franchise like Morgan O’Sullivan and Sheila Hockin. MGM Television, the studio behind the project, is now part of Amazon MGM Studios, working closely with Prime Video.
Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, expressed excitement about this partnership, highlighting the Hirsts’ ability to create engaging and authentic historical dramas. He mentioned how the story of Erik Bloodaxe offers a fascinating glimpse into a captivating period in history.
In addition to Bloodaxe, the Hirsts are working on another historical drama based on the novel A Day of Fire: A Novel of Pompeii for Amazon.
Michael Hirst shared his enthusiasm for returning to the Viking world, stating that he and Horatio aim to reveal extraordinary characters and true stories that shaped history.
