SpaceX’s massive rocket, Starship, launched for a test flight on March 6, 2025, from Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas. However, the excitement quickly turned to concern. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) shut down flights at several Florida airports after a failure during the test flight.
This mishap was not an isolated event. Earlier this year, SpaceX faced a similar problem during another Starship test, which caused debris to fall and disrupted commercial air traffic. Major airports impacted included Miami International, a key hub for American Airlines, as well as those in Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Orlando.
In a statement on social media, SpaceX explained, “During Starship’s ascent burn, the vehicle experienced a rapid unscheduled disassembly and contact was lost.” The team quickly coordinated with safety officials to follow safety protocols.
The launch took place around 6:30 p.m. ET, marking the eighth test flight for Starship. Following the incident, SpaceX announced plans to analyze data from the flight. They aim to understand what went wrong and improve future tests.
In January, a previous Starship test resulted in debris falling, leading to flight diversions and reports of damage in the Caribbean. Despite ongoing investigations, SpaceX was cleared by the FAA to conduct this latest test.
