In an exciting game on Thursday night, the Los Angeles Lakers overcame a 13-point deficit to defeat the New York Knicks 113-109 in overtime. This victory marked the Lakers’ eighth straight win and their 20th in the last 24 games, pushing their record to 40-21, solidifying their No. 2 position in the Western Conference. Meanwhile, the Knicks fell to 40-22, staying at No. 3 in the Eastern Conference.

Despite a rough start, the Lakers found their rhythm late in the game, largely thanks to their stars Luka Dončić and LeBron James. Dončić notched 32 points, along with seven rebounds and 12 assists, while James added 31 points, 12 rebounds, and eight assists. On the Knicks’ side, Jalen Brunson was impressive, scoring 39 points and dishing out 10 assists before suffering an ankle injury late in overtime.
The Knicks struggled in the fourth quarter, scoring only 15 points. This dip in performance provided the Lakers with the chance they needed. During the final minutes, Gabe Vincent and James combined to hit five 3-pointers, leading the Lakers to a 99-96 lead with just over a minute left. Brunson fought back, tying the score with a crucial drive and an ‘and-one’ play.
In the clutch moments, both teams had opportunities. The Lakers missed two key 3-pointers, while the Knicks faced intense pressure on their final possession, with Brunson being forced to pass under duress.
Overtime was all about momentum. Dončić scored quickly with back-to-back jumpers, extending the Lakers’ lead to 104-99. Although the Knicks managed to tie the score briefly after Brunson’s free throws, the Lakers maintained control for most of the extra period.
As for Brunson, he landed awkwardly on his right ankle in the final moments. He hobbled off after a brief check from the team staff, and there is concern about how this injury may affect the Knicks moving forward.
The Lakers showcased their resilience by overcoming a sluggish start. Coach JJ Redick had previously highlighted some issues that opponents might exploit, and the game provided proof of those concerns, with the Lakers struggling against the Knicks’ defensive pressure early on.
On the flip side, New York’s offensive woes continued to haunt them. They struggled with shooting, finishing just 10 of 43 from three-point range. After a strong start to the season, their shooting percentage has plummeted since January 1, affecting their gameplay significantly.
As the Lakers move forward, they’ll look to continue their winning streak. The Knicks, on the other hand, need to address their offensive challenges if they want to remain competitive as the playoffs approach.
