At Indiana University, the Jacobs School of Music offers a fascinating course called MUS Z404. It delves into the lyrics and life of Bob Dylan, allowing students to explore his ongoing relevance. Professor Gabriel Lubell, who leads the class, emphasizes how Dylan’s ideas continue to connect with audiences. “With Dylan, it’s amazing how relevant his thoughts and art still are,” he says.

What makes this class unique is its open, discussion-based format. Unlike more structured music courses, Z404 encourages students to engage in free-form conversations about Dylan’s work. There are no slides or strict outlines; instead, discussions flow naturally based on what students bring to the table. “I’ve never taught this class the same way twice,” Lubell explains. “The topics are always changing, just like Dylan himself.”

Students like Meredith Barber, a junior majoring in creative writing, appreciate this non-linear approach. It pushes them to think critically about the music rather than passively absorbing it. “There’s a Dylan lyric that says, ‘I can’t think for you, you have to decide,'” she notes. This idea encourages students to interpret his work in ways that resonate with them personally.

Through open discussions, the class paints a comprehensive picture of Dylan as an artist. Lubell avoids simply idolizing him. Instead, he prompts students to consider Dylan’s flaws and how they contribute to his ongoing legacy. “He’s not the perfect role model, but his work helps us understand the relationship between the individual and society,” Lubell says. Dylan writes about societal issues and often represents the voice of everyday people, which is part of what makes his songs timeless.

Currently, Z404 is one of several artist-focused courses offered to non-music majors at the Jacobs School, alongside classes on The Beatles and Frank Zappa. However, the fluid nature of the Dylan class sets it apart. “It’s rare to focus on a musician who’s both a historic figure and remains significant today,” Lubell points out. The popularity of Z404 over the years is a testament to Dylan’s lasting impact in a music industry that is constantly changing.

In today’s fast-paced world, where musical trends shift rapidly, Dylan stands out. Lubell believes it’s essential to study artists like him. “He’s dedicated to creating music that engages listeners,” he says. As long as Dylan’s music continues to inspire people, his legacy will live on.
