Steven Guilbeault, Canada’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, has revealed the new members of the Environment and Climate Change Youth Council (ECCYC). This group, made up of young leaders from across the country, will provide fresh insights on topics like nature restoration, environmental protection, climate action, and more. Their goal is to help guide federal decision-makers.
Guilbeault highlighted the importance of this council, stating, “The Youth Council gives young Canadians a voice on crucial climate issues. Empowered youth are essential for building a sustainable future.” He expressed excitement about working with this new generation of leaders.
The ECCYC is a vital part of Canada’s Youth Policy, which aims to ensure young people’s views are heard. It allows them to collaborate, share ideas, and develop skills while networking with peers across Canada.
The incoming cohort benefits from the accomplishments of the first ECCYC members, who made significant contributions like advising on the National Framework for Environmental Learning and shaping Canada’s stance in global climate negotiations.
One of the council members, Pearl Pique Carpina, hails from Whitehorse, Yukon. She has a Bachelor of Science in Northern Environmental and Conservation Sciences, showcasing the diverse expertise of the members.
Marci Ien, the Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, noted, “Young people have been at the forefront of fighting climate change. Engaging youth is crucial as we aim for net-zero emissions by 2050.” She praised the council as an excellent platform for youth to create real solutions for climate challenges.
Members will volunteer for a two-year term and were chosen through a merit-based selection process. The aim was to include diverse perspectives, including Indigenous voices, and to ensure a broad range of experiences are represented. The Youth Council fulfills the objectives of Canada’s Youth Policy, which emphasizes including young people in government decisions.
