Discover an Exciting Treasure: Dozens of Dinosaur Footprints Uncovered at an Australian School!

A remarkable discovery was made at Biloela State High School in Queensland, Australia. A slab of rock, about 200 million years old, displays 66 footprints from at least 47 individual dinosaurs. This rock has been on display for two decades, but its importance wasn’t recognized until Anthony Romilio from the University of Queensland examined it.

Romilio noticed many footprints on the slab. He immediately realized that this find was highly significant. The slab was so heavy that a team had to work together to lift it for proper study. During an inspection, Romilio even had to remove chewing gum left by students.

After creating a 3D model and processing photographs, the true scope of the find came to light. “As a paleontologist, I knew I had found a very important specimen,” Romilio said. However, because no fossil bones or skeletons from that era have been found in Australia, it’s tough to determine exactly which species made the tracks. Researchers believe the tracks belong to a species called Anomoepus scambus, known mainly from trace fossils like footprints.

The footprints’ dimensions suggest the dinosaurs stood about 20 to 76 centimeters tall and moved at speeds of 2 to 6 kilometers per hour. Romilio explains, “They’re all small animals that made the footprints. They seem to be the same type of two-legged plant-eating dinosaur.”

What’s also fascinating is the context. The ground where the dinosaurs walked was likely a silty surface with a shallow layer of water. Besides the dinosaur footprints, some holes were likely created by burrowing invertebrates.
