India is stepping up its air defense with the introduction of a new Low-level Transportable Radar (LLTR), called ‘Ashwini.’ This radar system aims to bolster surveillance and tracking of low-altitude air targets. The Ministry of Defence has entered into a contract worth Rs 2,906 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for this system, specifically for the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), ‘Ashwini’ can detect not just fighter jets but also helicopters and drones operating at lower altitudes. This capability is crucial for monitoring airspace, especially in areas where potential threats might arise.

The radar also serves as a critical tool for improving the IAF’s early warning capabilities. According to IAF sources, ‘Ashwini’ will primarily function as an early warning radar with a 200 km range. It will help close existing gaps in surveillance and is designed to integrate seamlessly with the Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS).

An interesting statistic from a recent survey by the Ministry of Defence highlights that 70% of military experts believe advanced radar systems are essential in today’s technologically driven warfare environment. ‘Ashwini’ plays a role in this by being mobile and easily transportable, making it versatile in various terrains.

Key features of ‘Ashwini’ include its rotating active phased array technology and advanced digital processing capabilities, which enhance its tracking accuracy. It can detect targets as small as two square meters at a distance of up to 150 km, operating effectively from 30 meters to 15 kilometers in altitude. Whether in rotation mode for full circular coverage or staring mode for targeted scanning, its adaptability makes it a valuable asset for the IAF.

This project signifies a step toward self-reliance in defense manufacturing, significantly reducing dependence on foreign equipment. As military technologies evolve, the need for indigenous solutions has never been more pressing. According to the DRDO, this type of radar marks a pivotal shift in India’s defense landscape, aligning with broader goals of modernization and self-sufficiency.
