The initiative highlights five key areas: screenings, tobacco use, exercise and nutrition, regular physician visits, and stress management. KMA President Evelyn Jones emphasizes the importance of preventative healthcare. “We want to help people take charge of their health and prevent diseases through smart lifestyle choices,” she said.

Screenings are crucial. For example, colorectal screenings should start at age 45. Depending on your tobacco history, lung cancer screenings may also need to happen earlier. The KMA urges Kentuckians to be proactive about screening for various cancers, including breast and skin cancer, as well as managing tobacco use.

Jones encourages finding alternatives to smoking, suggesting, “If you feel the urge to smoke, try taking a short walk instead.” This practical tip aligns with broader expert advice. Dr. Lesley Kellie, a lifestyle medicine expert, advocates for replacing unhealthy habits with healthier ones. "Instead of reaching for a cigarette, consider using a straw or practicing deep breathing exercises," she recommends.

Stress management is another critical element. Kellie notes that unmanaged stress can lead to serious health issues, including depression and heart disease. By reducing stress, individuals can significantly improve their overall wellbeing.

Moreover, small dietary changes and incorporating even a little exercise can lead to significant health benefits. A recent report from the CDC shows that about 32% of adults in Kentucky struggle with obesity, which highlights the need for initiatives like this one. Simple steps can yield powerful effects, making Kentucky a healthier state overall.
