Binghamton Softball Teams Up for Action-Packed Doubleheader Split at Mercer

MACON, Ga. – Binghamton University faced Mercer in a tough doubleheader on Friday. The Bearcats managed to split the series, winning the first game 2-1 but losing the second game 3-1.

In the opener, Binghamton found itself trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning when freshman designated player Rachel Carey stepped up. She hit a home run over the right-center field fence, giving her a home run in three consecutive games. It was a notable achievement; the last Bearcat to accomplish this was Sara Herskowitz back in 2019.

Just moments later, senior third baseman Sarah Rende joined in, hitting another homer to give Binghamton the lead. Rende has been on fire, having hit multiple home runs over the past two games.

Junior pitcher Brianna Roberts took the mound and finished strong, navigating a tricky bases-loaded situation in the seventh inning to secure her seventh win of the season. Mercer’s pitcher, Grace Roark, limited the Bearcats to just two hits but ended up with a loss, dropping her record to 3-4.

The second game didn’t go as well for Binghamton. Mercer’s Gabby Ellis pitched a solid game, allowing only one run and three hits, improving her record to 5-1. The Bears quickly built a lead, scoring two runs in the first inning, while Binghamton managed to get one run back in the third from an RBI single by junior Emma Lawson. Mercer’s Hedgecock, who was impactful in both games, scored two runs.

Junior pitcher Olivia Kennedy had a tough outing, recording eight strikeouts but ultimately couldn’t stop the Bears from scoring. Her record now stands at 3-6.

It’s an exciting time for college softball, with many players showing impressive skills and resilience. According to a recent NCAA report, participation in women’s college sports has risen by 10% over the past five years, reflecting growing interest and support in women’s athletic programs.

Looking ahead, Binghamton will face Mercer again for the final game of the series at 11 a.m. on Saturday. As the season progresses, fans are hopeful to see more thrilling performances from both teams.
