Statement from Julia Levin, Associate Director, National Climate, Environmental Defense Canada
Ottawa, on the territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg People – Canada’s carbon pricing rules make big polluters pay for their emissions. This system encourages companies, especially in the oil and gas sector, to invest in cleaner technologies. The result? We see a reduction in pollution levels, more effectively than other measures have achieved.
In the face of economic challenges, Canada must strengthen its relationships with nations that prioritize the environment, like those in the European Union. However, we can only thrive in those markets if we maintain robust environmental regulations such as carbon pricing.
Political figures proposing to eliminate these regulations are prioritizing corporate profits over public welfare. Just look at the consequences of similar policies in the U.S. After former President Trump rolled back climate regulations, air quality worsened, and extreme weather events intensified, leading to significant public health concerns.
Recent surveys reflect public sentiment on this issue. A survey by the Canadian Climate Institute found that over 80% of Canadians believe that climate change is a serious threat. This sentiment underscores the urgency of maintaining strong climate action to protect both our health and economy.
Without a commitment to climate action, we risk deteriorating public health and economic stability. Increased pollution and climate change could endanger our communities and the landscapes we cherish. Sticking to effective climate strategies not only safeguards Canadians but also reinforces national unity and resilience.
Background Information:
- According to the Canadian Climate Institute, industrial carbon pricing is predicted to account for 23% to 39% of the total emissions cuts needed by 2030. The research shows that this policy could help avoid emissions equivalent to 53 to 90 Mt.
- The European Union is introducing the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which requires foreign companies to pay the difference between their local carbon pricing and the EU’s. This move is aimed at leveling the playing field and reducing carbon leakage.
