South Alabama’s basketball season ended abruptly when the school’s NIT invitation was taken back. Coach Richie Riley expressed his frustration, calling the handling of the situation “unacceptable.”
Late one evening, Riley received news that his team would join the NIT after UC Riverside declined their invitation due to a prior commitment to another tournament. After informing his players of this news, UC Riverside managed to withdraw from the other tournament and accepted the NIT bid, leaving South Alabama disappointed.
In Riley’s own words, he recounted the moment he conveyed the good news to his team. Soon after, he received a call that changed everything. “No, UC Riverside is back in. I hate that we had to do this,” he was told. This sudden shift left Riley and the players feeling blindsided.
The NIT and the Sun Belt Conference later released statements addressing the situation, referring to South Alabama’s invitation as “premature.” They expressed regret for the emotional toll this incident took on the players and celebrated the team’s achievements, including their co-championship in the Sun Belt regular season.
This season, South Alabama finished strong with a record of 21-11, despite losing in the conference tournament semifinals to Arkansas. UC Riverside, with a 21-12 record, is now set to compete against Santa Clara in the NIT.
This type of situation raises further questions about the transparency and decision-making processes in collegiate athletics. As teams fight for their spot in tournaments, any last-minute changes can severely impact student-athletes, who already face immense pressure.
