Enhancing Health Care Access: Tampa General Hospital’s Initiative for Rural Communities in Palm Beach County

Through strategic partnerships, Tampa General Hospital is enhancing access to top-notch healthcare, especially in rural areas. Their recent collaboration with the Health Care District of Palm Beach County is a significant step in this direction. This move aligns perfectly with Senate President Ben Albritton’s goal of revitalizing rural communities in Florida.

Earlier this year, Tampa General agreed to lead Lakeside Medical Center in Belle Glade, a public teaching facility under the Health Care District. John Couris, President and CEO of Tampa General, expressed excitement about this partnership. “We’re extending our expertise to improve care and expand access in the Glades,” he said.

Rural areas across the U.S. have struggled with limited healthcare options. Florida is no exception. According to research, rural communities in Florida face a 40% higher rate of preventable hospitalizations and a 23% higher mortality rate compared to urban settings. This partnership is an attempt to address these alarming statistics and bring quality care closer to home.

Lakeside Medical Center has been serving the Belle Glade community since 2009. The recent agreement, approved by the Health District Board, will begin on February 1. Tampa General will work to elevate the quality of care, improve clinical training, and ensure better financial health for the facility.

“Joining forces will help us provide high-quality care to underserved populations,” noted Darcy J. Davis, President and CEO of the Health Care District. With combined efforts, both organizations aim to improve the wellness of Glades communities for generations.

To lead these initiatives, Tampa General has appointed Ron Doncaster as vice president of operations at Lakeside. Doncaster brings years of healthcare leadership experience, having worked with respected institutions like Mass General Brigham. He emphasizes the importance of meeting community needs and enhancing care accessibility without sacrificing the personal touch of a local hospital.

The partnership has garnered positive reactions from the local community. Belle Glade resident Connie Boldin Jr. remarked, “It will be a game-changer for this community.”

The Health Care District retains ownership of Lakeside Medical Center and its employees, ensuring that this collaboration maximizes resources while maintaining local control. This agreement broadens Tampa General’s existing network of services in Palm Beach County, which includes various specialties such as cancer care and general surgery.

Tampa General Hospital is recognized as one of the largest academic health systems in the U.S., with over 150 care locations statewide. Ranked second in Florida and among the top 50 hospitals nationally by U.S. News & World Report, Tampa General continues its mission to provide innovative and accessible health care.

In summary, the collaboration between Tampa General and Lakeside Medical Center reflects a commitment to improving health outcomes in rural Florida. By leveraging expertise, resources, and community support, they aim to create a more robust health care landscape for areas that have long been underserved.
