The ACU softball team faced off against UT Arlington in a doubleheader on Saturday after a tough 14-inning game the previous night. They split the series, losing the first match 7-0 but bouncing back to win the second game 4-1.
After Saturday’s games, ACU’s record stands at 8-24 overall and 4-5 in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). They currently sit in a three-way tie for fifth place. With five more conference series left, including three at home, the Wildcats are still in the playoff picture.
On Friday, ACU narrowly lost to UT Arlington when a wild pitch in the 14th inning allowed a runner to score, ending the game 4-3. Pitcher Lina Russo threw an incredible 203 pitches over 13.2 innings, showcasing her stamina and skill. Coach Jo Koons praised her performance and emphasized the team’s resilience, saying, “This is a marathon, not a sprint.”
In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, ACU struggled defensively. They had three errors, leading to five unearned runs for the Lady Mavericks. Chase Mueller started on the mound but was replaced by Ella Beeman after a shaky second inning.
In the second game, the Wildcats quickly took control. Audrey Lacina hit a key bases-loaded single, scoring Taylor Bachmeyer. This set the tone for the game, and ACU maintained their lead. Beeman pitched effectively, allowing only one hit in three innings, and Russo secured the save with solid relief work.
Looking ahead, ACU has an important homestand coming up against Utah Tech. This series is critical as they aim to climb the conference standings. After the home games, they will also host North Texas and Texas Tech in non-conference matchups.
As the season progresses, the team remains focused on improving and making a push toward the top of the WAC. With ongoing dedication and teamwork, the Wildcats are more than ready for the challenges ahead.
