The launch of India’s first hydrogen fuel cell train is now expected to be delayed until June. Technical issues have arisen during testing, as reported by Moneycontrol. Originally, the government aimed to have the train operational by December 2024.

During testing, officials discovered that the hydrogen fuel cell’s capacity needs adjustment to handle maximum loads effectively. A senior railway official mentioned that modifications will take about two to three months, followed by additional testing before the train can roll out for commercial use.

The train is set to run on the historic Kalka-Shimla route. It was initially scheduled to cover this 96-kilometer distance by December 2024. However, it has shown limitations, capable of operating under 80% load in challenging weather conditions.

Challenges and Specifications

This hydrogen train can carry up to 2,638 passengers but may need to reduce its speed when approaching full capacity, especially in temperatures below 5°C or above 35°C. A railway official stated that navigating the mountainous terrain at high loads could hinder the train’s top speed of 110 km/h.

To tackle these challenges, the upcoming prototype will feature a larger fuel cell. Indian Railways is also strengthening the tracks along the Shimla-Kalka route to allow the train to reach speeds of around 100 km/h. In an effort to boost development, railway authorities have invited experts from the renewable energy sector to evaluate the design.
