Who will save our hills?

There’s a serious environmental issue happening near Gauripur and Changsari along the Brahmaputra that often goes unnoticed. While discussions about climate change, deforestation, and pollution are common, the rapid cutting of hills in this region adds to ecological problems. These hills, once vital for preventing soil erosion and supporting diverse wildlife, are disappearing quickly. This loss contributes to rising temperatures, strange rainfall patterns, floods, and landslides—all challenges Assam faces annually. Yet, little proactive action has been taken to address these issues.

Despite laws in place to protect the environment, poor enforcement allows land mafias and construction companies to exploit these natural resources for quick profit. The silence from both policymakers and the public raises questions about accountability and sustainability.

Experts emphasize that we need immediate action. A recent study from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority reveals that unregulated hill cutting has been a leading factor in the region’s increasing natural disasters. To combat this, it’s crucial for authorities to enforce existing laws, impose strict penalties for violators, and promote efforts to plant new trees. Communities and activists can also play a role by raising awareness and demanding action before it’s too late. Climate change doesn’t just exist in distant conversations; it’s impacting us right here and now.

Marriage vs. Live-in Relationships

I want to thank Kalpana Bora for addressing a critical topic in her article, “Dark shadow of live-in relationship,” published on March 28. It’s true that many young people today choose to live together without marriage. But is that the best choice? Living without the commitment of marriage can mean a lack of expectations and responsibilities. Over time, this can lead to complications, especially for children born from these unions. Studies show that children from stable marriages tend to have better developmental outcomes compared to those from more casual arrangements. It raises the question: who ultimately suffers the most in these scenarios? Often, it’s women who face social stigma and emotional challenges when relationships end.

While society evolves, the traditional view of marriage still holds weight. Many men may hesitate to partner with a woman who has a live-in background, leading to social isolation for these women. It’s crucial for young women to consider whether they value short-term freedom or long-term happiness, security, and peace. Life is precious, and we must nurture it rather than allow it to be diminished by fleeting choices.

Let’s encourage a society that appreciates deep-rooted values. Marriage isn’t just a personal choice; it’s a foundation for a stable community. Advocating for marriage means advocating for a healthier society overall.

Funding Disputes in Tamil Nadu

There’s an ongoing debate about funding discrepancies in India, particularly between Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Despite Uttar Pradesh’s much larger population, Tamil Nadu claims it has not received adequate funds under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGS). DMK MP K. Kanimozhi brought this issue to light, questioning the government about over ₹4,000 crore owed to Tamil Nadu for the last five months. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh reportedly receives nearly ₹10,000 crore, even though it has a population that’s almost three times larger. This has fueled protests and raised concerns about fairness in financial distribution at the national level.
