The university announced this exciting news recently, highlighting Kermit’s star status and his background as an environmental advocate and beloved character from “The Muppet Show” and “Sesame Street.”

Darryll J. Pines, the university president, expressed enthusiasm about Kermit’s participation. He believes Kermit’s wisdom and optimism will resonate with graduates and their families during this significant moment.

In a video announcement, Kermit made a light-hearted appearance, saying, “Uh, I guess it’s me,” with a charming smile. This speech is meaningful for Kermit as well; he has ties to the university through his creator, Jim Henson, who graduated in 1960. Kermit’s journey began from humble materials—his first version was made from a discarded coat and a couple of ping pong balls. Henson once described Kermit as his alter ego, a reflection of the wisdom wrapped in humor that he often shared.

Kermit is no stranger to commencement speeches. In fact, he spoke at Southampton College in 1996, earning an honorary doctorate for his work in environmental awareness. Graduates then showed their support by donning green stickers that read “Kermit ’96,” although reactions were mixed—some welcomed the puppet, while others were less impressed.

At his previous speech, he shared a poignant thought: “May success and a smile always be yours, even when you’re knee-deep in the sticky muck of life.” Such insights, delivered with his signature charm, can provide a needed dose of motivation.

Interestingly, colleges have been known to break tradition, inviting unconventional speakers. Last year, for example, D’Youville University featured an AI robot at its ceremony. While reaction was varied, it reflects a growing trend to think outside the box.
