As Nyeri National Polytechnic marks its fifth graduation ceremony, it also stands out for its commitment to combat climate change. The institution is participating in a nationwide initiative to plant 12 billion trees by 2032.

To support this effort, the polytechnic has established a tree nursery that has produced over 100,000 seedlings. The school, along with its students, is actively engaged in tree planting initiatives within the campus and surrounding areas, including the Tumutumu hills, which have been designated for restoration by the government.

This green movement is powered by various student clubs, like the Tourism club, Green Movement club, Scouts, and Environmental clubs. These groups work tirelessly to promote environmental conservation and engage their peers in sustainable practices.

In addition to tree planting, the institution is embracing renewable energy. They’ve installed solar panels and a bio-gas plant, which not only help lower energy costs but also reduce pollution. The Greening TVETs program, launched in June 2023 by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Environment, aims to make Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions leaders in sustainable practices. The initiative focuses on reducing carbon emissions and integrating environmental awareness into education. It equips students with valuable skills toward a greener economy.

Data from a recent survey conducted by the World Economic Forum indicates that 70% of young people are increasingly focused on sustainability. This shift emphasizes the vital role educational institutions like Nyeri National Polytechnic play in shaping future generations to be more environmentally conscious.
