West Virginia Mountaineers Narrowly Fall to No. 19 UCF in Thrilling Orlando Showdown

The West Virginia University women’s tennis team faced a tough challenge on Sunday, losing 4-0 to the No. 19 ranked UCF in Orlando, Florida. After a recent victory in the Big 12 Conference, the Mountaineers (now 7-14, 1-9 Big 12) went up against their sixth ranked opponent this season.

UCF took control early, winning all the doubles matches decisively. In singles matches, they continued their strong performance and quickly clinched the victory.

Senior Mille Haagensen struggled against UCF’s No. 110 Olivia Lincer, losing 6-1, 6-1. Another senior, Michaela Kucharova, lost her match at the No. 3 spot 6-1, 6-3. The final point came when freshman Laura Villanueva Morillo was defeated by Jade Psonka, 6-3, 6-1.

  • No. 110 Olivia Lincer (UCF) defeated Mille Haagensen (WVU), 6-1, 6-1
  • Michaela Kucharova (WVU) lost to Olivia Bergler (UCF), 6-1, 6-3
  • Laura Villanueva Morillo (WVU) lost to Jade Psonka (UCF), 6-3, 6-1
  • Julie Bousseau (WVU) was competing against No. 85 Sophia Biolay (UCF) but the match was unfinished at 6-3, 4-5
  • Maja Dodik (WVU) faced off against Hannah Rylatt (UCF) and was at 6-4, 1-6 when it was left unfinished
  • Lyla Byers (WVU) was playing Donatella Guarnieri (UCF) but the match was also unfinished, at 6-7, 3-1

Despite the loss, the team will look to bounce back as they return to Morgantown for their upcoming matches against Texas Tech on Friday, April 4, and Colorado on Sunday, April 6, which will also serve as senior day.
