Railway Minister Ashwini spoke about this idea during a recent session in the Lok Sabha on April 2, 2025. The plan came to light when DMK’s Sumathy Thamizhachi Thangapandian raised concerns about the limited South Indian food options on Vande Bharat trains in Tamil Nadu. In response, Minister Vaishnaw shared details of a pilot program launched by Southern Railways. This program seeks to improve travel experiences by serving local dishes that highlight the unique flavors of the regions the trains travel through.
If this pilot proves successful, Indian Railways plans to expand the program nationwide. Passengers on trains passing through different areas will be treated to meals that showcase local specialties. This approach not only enhances the travel experience but also promotes regional cuisines across India.
Language accessibility is another important aspect of this initiative. Currently, pantry staff primarily communicate in Hindi, which can create challenges for passengers who speak different languages. Thangapandian brought this up, suggesting that while the focus on regional food is promising, addressing language barriers is also crucial for improving overall service.

According to a study by the World Travel and Tourism Council, 87% of travelers believe that trying local cuisine is an essential part of their travel experience.
