In their last match, Wheeling faced the top-ranked team, Frostburg State. The game didn’t start well for them; they fell behind quickly, with Frostburg scoring eight times in the first quarter. Even though the Cardinals managed to score a couple of goals by halftime, they were down 12-2. Wheeling kept fighting and matched Frostburg with 12 shots in the second half. They finished the game with a total of six goals but ultimately lost 21-6.

Despite the tough game, there were bright spots for the Cardinals. Trinity Rose shined as she racked up three points, including two goals in the second half. She leads the team with 25 goals this season, ranking seventh in the MEC. Rose’s contributions are crucial as the team pushes toward the end of the season.

In another highlight, goalie Maisy Latus achieved a career milestone by making her 500th save during the recent match. This impressive feat reflects her dedication and skill in the game. Latus currently leads with 66 saves this season. Freshman Giovanna Perkins is also making waves. She was recently named MEC’s Defensive Player of the Week after a great performance against Davis & Elkins and Frostburg State, showcasing the strength of the team’s defense.

The Cardinals have six games left, with five happening within the conference. They are tied for second place with Charleston and just a game and a half behind Frostburg State. This means every game counts as they aim for a playoff spot in the 2025 MEC Women’s Lacrosse Tournament. Their upcoming matches are crucial, offering them a chance to gain more wins and secure a spot in the tournament.

Wheeling has had a strong record against Charleston in the past, leading their all-time series 5-0. The last time these teams met was in 2019, with Wheeling winning an exciting match 18-16. As both teams ramp up their rivalry, Wheeling aims to keep their winning streak alive on Charleston’s home turf.
