FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki has made it clear that the studio is not abandoning its roots in single-player games, despite some new online titles in development.

The company is known for its rich single-player experiences, with hits like the Dark Souls series and the acclaimed Elden Ring. Recently, they announced Nightreign, which focuses on online co-op gameplay, and Duskbloods, set to launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 as a PvPvE game. Yet, Miyazaki reassures fans: “This doesn’t mean we are shifting our focus to multiplayer games for the future,” he said in his interview with Nintendo.
Miyazaki emphasized that they will keep developing stories that embrace their traditional style. He expressed an ongoing interest in the PvPvE model, stating it offers exciting possibilities for game design and enemy encounters. This approach builds on the intricate challenge that fans have come to love.
Duskbloods was originally intended for the first Switch but shifted to the new console to fully realize its online potential. Players will step into the shoes of "Bloodsworn," characters imbued with special blood that grants them extraordinary abilities reminiscent of vampires, but with a unique twist. Instead of embodying traditional horror elements, these figures explore romantic themes, as they compete for “First Blood” amidst the collapse of human society known as the “Twilight of Humanity.”
The game’s setting is distinctive and non-linear, allowing for various environments—ranging from Gothic to Victorian styles. Unique gameplay mechanics will include dynamic actions like sprinting and double jumps, along with a greater emphasis on firearm combat compared to FromSoftware’s earlier works.
Players can choose from a diverse array of characters, each with their own skills and weapons. The game features a hub area where up to eight players can gather for matches. Maintaining a balance between combat and strategy is vital, as players can earn "Victory Points" not only through fighting but also by smartly navigating the game’s challenges—an approach that rewards both aggression and cunning.
Furthermore, an event system will dynamically shift game conditions, similar to what viewers saw in Nightreign. Each character will have specific roles—sometimes involving co-op tasks—adding layers to the combat and enhancing the multiplayer experience. Lore enthusiasts will appreciate how character customization reveals profound backstories, tied to the game’s thematic elements.
Interestingly, a whimsical character, a winged rat, will serve as a guide between battles, introducing a lighter, Nintendo-like vibe to the experience. Miyazaki explained, “We tried something cute for a change.”
As Duskbloods continues to garner attention, many fans are already buzzing about its potential, especially in light of favorable comparisons to Bloodborne. The anticipation is real, and with FromSoftware’s history of creating immersive worlds, players are likely in for a treat.
