In Hyderabad, doctors are noticing more young adults complaining about severe muscle cramps and spasms. Many of these cases relate to a shortage of magnesium, often caused by the overuse of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). These medications, like omeprazole and rabeprazole, are typically prescribed for treating acidity but have become more common during the pandemic.
Dr. Aditya Bapuji, a family physician, shared that the number of cases has increased significantly. “We used to see two or three cases a week. Now, it’s up to seven or eight,” he said. This jump is linked to lifestyle changes, prolonged stress, and the rise of self-medication.
Younger people often turn to PPIs for anxiety-induced acidity or sleep problems. According to Dr. Bapuji, some even take them to treat the effects of irregular eating during hectic times. This trend of increased usage is concerning because it can lead to lasting issues. For instance, a 45-year-old man with no prior health problems suffered cramps and other symptoms after using PPIs for too long. He found no relief from muscle relaxants until he stopped taking the medication and corrected his magnesium levels.
Neurologist Dr. Sudhir Kumar adds that long-term PPI usage can keep magnesium levels low, which could also cause vitamin B12 deficiency. “Even with supplements, the body may not absorb magnesium properly unless the PPI is stopped,” he warned.
Another patient, a 37-year-old from Somajiguda, experienced severe leg pain during a busy work period. His pain worsened to the point where simply getting out of a chair became difficult. This highlights that muscle cramps can stem from various factors: dehydration, stress, overuse, and nutritional imbalances.
Recent studies suggest that stress levels have risen significantly due to work demands and lifestyle changes, especially as many adapt to new routines. A survey by the American Psychological Association noted that about 78% of respondents reported physiological symptoms tied to stress, with muscle cramps being among them.
Doctors recommend regular check-ups to manage these risks and suggest that lifestyle adjustments can help, such as better hydration and posture corrections.
