Meet Dr. Richard Sévère: PNW’s Dynamic New CHESS Dean Leading the Future of Education

Dr. Richard Sévère has just been appointed as the new Dean of the College of Humanities, Education, and Social Sciences (CHESS) at Purdue University Northwest, starting July 1, 2025. His arrival comes at a crucial time as the university prepares to roll out its new strategic plan.

Dr. Sévère brings a wealth of experience from Valparaiso University, where he was the associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He oversaw 17 departments and managed budgets while boosting research opportunities for faculty. His leadership also shone through in his previous roles at Centenary University, where he developed writing programs that encouraged student engagement and creativity.

Experts in higher education emphasize the importance of leaders like Dr. Sévère in fostering an inclusive environment. Many students at PNW are first-generation college attendees or adult learners. Their unique challenges demand innovative approaches, and Dr. Sévère’s background positions him well to support and empower these students.

His academic credentials are equally impressive. Dr. Sévère earned his Ph.D. in Medieval Literature from Purdue University after completing his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in English at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. This diverse educational background enriches his perspective, especially in a college that values both humanities and social sciences.

As PNW embarks on its new strategic initiatives, collaboration among faculty, students, and staff will be essential. Recent studies highlight that colleges that prioritize community engagement and resource development see better outcomes for their students. Dr. Sévère’s appointment signals a strong commitment to these values at PNW.

Before we transition to the new leadership, it’s important to recognize the efforts of Dr. Michael Lynn, who served admirably as interim dean. His contributions have set a solid foundation for Dr. Sévère’s upcoming leadership.

The university community is eager to see how Dr. Sévère will strengthen CHESS and continue to improve the student experience. His unique blend of academic expertise and administrative leadership promises a bright future for the college.
