CLINTON HILL — Pratt Institute is welcoming author Lisa E. Bloom for a session on her book “Climate Change and the New Polar Aesthetics” on April 21. The event runs from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Alumni Reading Room at the Main Library, located at 200 Willoughby Ave.
Published in 2022, Bloom’s book explores the intersections of environmental studies, art, and media culture. She examines how artists and filmmakers from arctic and antarctic regions bring attention to climate issues. Bloom highlights insights from feminist, Black, Indigenous, and other global perspectives, making complex environmental topics accessible.
Bloom, who works between New York and California, has contributed significantly to cultural studies through her five published books. She was a scholar-in-residence at the Beatrice Bain Center at UC Berkeley from 2018 to 2024.
In the words of Alice Oates from H-Environment reviews, "This book will deepen your understanding of art, activism, and scholarship. It’s a must-read for anyone invested in these topics."
Engagement around climate change is growing. A 2023 Pew Research survey showed that 80% of Americans are concerned about climate change. As public awareness rises, discussions like Bloom’s become crucial, showing how creative expressions can influence perceptions and actions regarding the climate crisis.
