Discover Aspen Dunn: A Rising Star at the University of Nevada, Reno

Hi there! I’m Aspen Jo Dunn, and I work as an academic advisor at the College of Business. Originally from Las Vegas, Nevada, I graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno, where I earned my Bachelor’s in Social Work and a Master’s in Higher Education Administration.

My journey through college was quite an adventure. I’ve held roles like Resident Assistant in various dorms and served as an Orientation Leader. My time was filled with experiences, from interning in diverse offices like Student Conduct to being part of clubs such as Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and the Improv Club. I also volunteered with Trans Support Reno, helping to advocate for trans individuals.

Navigating college as a First-Gen, Non-Binary, Latine, Jewish person was a challenge for me. Discovering my Queerness wasn’t easy, especially while juggling academic pressure and personal growth. I struggled, especially with my first exam, but I was fortunate to have support from friends, mentors, and university resources. Their encouragement helped me find my path and empowered me to assist others in their journeys.

I believe in creating a safe and comfortable environment for students. I aim to offer the same support and guidance that helped me succeed.

Fun Facts:

– I play several instruments, including violin, viola, cello, contrabass, and bass drum. I’m also a baritone and love acting.
– I enjoy watching TV and love hearing recommendations for movies, anime, or shows!
– Video games are a passion of mine—there’s nothing like a great gaming session!

In recent years, studies show a rise in the number of first-generation college students seeking academic support. According to a report from the National Center for Education Statistics, 31% of undergraduate students in 2020 were first-generation. This highlights the importance of resources like academic advising and mentoring, especially for those who may feel lost in the college experience.

In conclusion, I’m dedicated to ensuring students have the guidance they need to thrive in their academic journeys. Together, we can navigate the complexities of college life!
