DP World and India Unveil Bharat Africa Setu: A Bold Initiative to Double Trade with Africa!

DP World and the Government of India have joined forces to launch the Bharat Africa Setu, a new trade initiative designed to double trade between India and Africa. This exciting announcement took place during an official visit from UAE leaders, including Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed and Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, CEO of DP World, and India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal.

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem highlighted Africa’s potential as a crucial player in the global economy. He believes that building strong trade partnerships will help boost growth on the continent. The Bharat Africa Setu aims to make it easier for Indian exporters to tap into Africa’s market, which offers vast opportunities.

Supported by India’s Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of External Affairs, this initiative plans to link DP World’s network of ports and economic zones in both regions. Indian exporters will gain access to 53 African countries and around 260,000 sales points through this integrated trade platform.

Currently, DP World operates 10 ports and terminals, three economic zones, and over 200 warehouses across Africa. The Bharat Africa Setu will enhance connectivity by integrating services such as export finance, marketing, and logistics with the necessary infrastructure.

Africa’s market is significant, importing around $430 billion worth of goods annually. Currently, India’s share in this market is just 6.5%, equating to about $28 billion. However, with this new initiative, experts predict that India’s trade share could grow to 12% by 2030.

Piyush Goyal emphasized the importance of improving trade flows and reducing barriers for Indian businesses. Strengthening ties with Africa is seen as a golden opportunity to enhance economic growth on both sides of the Arabian Sea.

The launch of Bharat Africa Setu coincides with the construction of Bharat Mart, a massive 2.7 million square foot marketplace in Dubai. This venue aims to further enhance trade links between India and global markets. Phase one of Bharat Mart, covering 1.3 million square feet, is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. It will feature 1,500 showrooms, extensive warehousing, and dedicated spaces for women-led businesses from India.

As global markets evolve, initiatives like the Bharat Africa Setu can play a vital role in shaping trade relationships, encouraging innovation, and fostering growth in emerging economies. By focusing on connectivity and collaboration, both India and Africa stand to benefit immensely.
