Join the Global Conversation: Dhaka Welcomes International Workshop on Climate Adaptation Strategies

An international workshop focused on using earth remote sensing technologies to tackle climate challenges began in Dhaka this Saturday. The two-day event, named “Enhancing Climate Adaptation and Resilience Through Earth Observation in the South Asian Region,” is taking place at BRAC University.

This workshop is a collaboration between Jagannath University’s Department of Geography and Environment, BRAC University’s Center for Climate Change and Environmental Research, and the Aerospace Information Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It has gained support from various organizations, including the Asia-Oceania Group on Earth Observations.

Experts from Bangladesh, China, the UK, and Nepal gathered to discuss the vital role of earth observation in understanding climate risks and improving disaster management. Eminent figures such as Ainun Nishat, a professor emeritus at BRAC University, led the inaugural session, alongside Jagannath University’s Vice-Chancellor Md Rezaul Karim as the chief guest.

One of the key insights shared was the importance of using data from earth observation for better decision-making regarding climate resilience. Professor Md Nurul Islam of National University emphasized that universities are evolving into important hubs for climate adaptation, not just centers for education and research.

According to recent studies, around 70% of countries are now prioritizing climate adaptations and disaster resilience in their educational systems. This shift demonstrates the growing recognition that institutions play a crucial role in equipping future leaders with the necessary tools to combat climate change.

Professor Jianjun Wu from Beijing Normal University highlighted the need for collaborative research and technology-sharing to improve disaster management across South Asia. His views align with those of Ashish Damle, the Country Director for Oxfam in Bangladesh, who stated that aligning technology with inclusive policies is essential for achieving climate justice.

Furthermore, Professor Mohammad Abdul Quader from Jagannath University mentioned that the workshop aims to provide young researchers with hands-on experience in earth observation and GIS technologies. By equipping them with these skills, the workshop seeks to foster a new generation of experts who can effectively address environmental challenges.

As the world faces climate change, workshops like this one illustrate the urgent need for innovative solutions. Earth observation technologies can play a key role in managing resources wisely and ensuring a sustainable future for South Asia.
