A black bear with a peculiar appearance was spotted in Port Renfrew, British Columbia, on April 12. Jennifer Heinrichs was taken aback when she noticed the bear had lost fur around its eyes and snout.

“I wasn’t focused on the missing fur at first; I was just fascinated by the bear and capturing photos from a safe distance in my car,” Heinrichs explained. “It looked strange—like it was wearing a mask—but otherwise, it seemed healthy.”

Curious about the bear’s unusual look, Heinrichs shared her photos in the Field Naturalists of Vancouver Island Facebook group. The post sparked a debate with various theories about the cause of its fur loss. Suggestions ranged from mange and frostbite to claims that the photos were altered with AI technology. These claims were quickly dismissed by the group’s moderator, who carefully vets all submissions.

To find answers, Heinrichs reached out to wildlife experts. The Northern Lights Wildlife Society suggested that the bear might be affected by “classic demodex ursi,” a skin mite specific to black bears. These mites live in hair follicles and can lead to a condition called demodicosis, which causes hair loss but is not contagious. Thankfully, the fur usually grows back.

Robin Campbell, founder of the North Island Wildlife Recovery Association, also weighed in. He expressed that there is no immediate cause for concern. “The bear could simply be going through a spring coat shedding,” Campbell noted, emphasizing that nature has a way of taking care of wildlife.

Interestingly, this isn’t an isolated incident. A study published in the Journal of Wildlife Diseases found that many black bears experience some form of skin irritation after emerging from hibernation. This is a natural part of their lifecycle as they transition from the harsh winter environment.
