Breaking: LAFC Head Coach Steve Cherundolo Announces Departure at Season’s End – What This Means for the Team’s Future

Steve Cherundolo, the head coach of LAFC, has shared that he will step down after the 2025 MLS season concludes. This decision comes after much thought and discussions with his family. He plans to return to Germany, despite his love for Los Angeles and the LAFC community. Cherundolo emphasized his commitment to achieving success in the upcoming season, aiming to continue winning trophies.

Since taking the reins in January 2022, Cherundolo has had impressive success as the second head coach in LAFC’s history. He made headlines by becoming the only MLS coach to win both the Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup in his inaugural season. Under his leadership, LAFC also clinched the 2024 U.S. Open Cup, boasting a strong overall record of 87 wins, 43 losses, and 26 ties across all competitions.

John Thorrington, LAFC’s Co-President & General Manager, praised Cherundolo for his leadership abilities, highlighting his substantial contributions to the club. Thorrington expressed full support for Cherundolo’s family-oriented decision and reiterated the team’s focus on securing more championships this season.

In his second year, Cherundolo led LAFC to both the Concacaf Champions League and MLS Cup finals, a unique feat for an MLS coach within their first two seasons. He also guided the team to the top spot in the Western Conference in 2024 and achieved the seventh-fastest record for 50 regular-season wins in MLS history by September 2024.

Bennett Rosenthal, LAFC’s Lead Managing Owner, expressed gratitude for Cherundolo’s efforts and contributions to the club. He acknowledged the importance of family in Cherundolo’s decision and reaffirmed that he will always be part of the LAFC family.

Cherundolo’s overall record stands at 58 wins, 31 losses, and 21 ties in the regular MLS season, along with a playoff record of eight wins, three losses, and one tie. This track record not only illustrates his coaching skills but also positions him among the top coaches in the league.

As Cherundolo prepares for his departure, there’s a mix of emotions among fans and players. Many appreciate his achievements and leadership but are also saddened to see him go. Social media buzz reflects this, with fans sharing heartfelt messages and thanking him for his contributions.

In terms of the broader MLS landscape, Cherundolo’s success aligns with growing trends in coaching talent. According to a recent report from the Sporting News, the league has seen a rise in former players transitioning to coaching roles, bringing a wealth of experience to their teams. This shift may influence how clubs approach coaching hires in the future, looking for those with a deep understanding of the game.
