Kickstarting 2025 Turtle Nesting Season: Ministry of Environment and Climate Change’s Inaugural Launch

On April 18, 2025, Qatar’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, kicked off the 2025 sea turtle nesting season. This event was held at Fuwairit Beach, where a cleanup and rehabilitation campaign was also launched in partnership with Qatar University.

The Ministry has been dedicated to protecting wildlife, especially sea turtles, for over twenty years. Hawksbill turtles are among the species being actively monitored and protected. Eng. Abdulaziz bin Ahmed Al Mahmoud, the Undersecretary of the Ministry, shared that these turtles are vital to the health of Qatar’s marine environment. The ongoing projects have allowed tens of thousands of baby turtles to be released into the wild, boosting biodiversity in the area.

Dr. Ibrahim Abdul Latif Al-Musalmani, an Assistant Undersecretary at the Ministry, highlighted that hawksbill turtles nest on Qatar’s northern beaches from April to June. After laying their eggs, the hatching occurs roughly two months later. Keeping nesting sites clean is crucial for the success of these turtles, as Dr. Al-Musalmani noted that every effort to maintain the pristine condition of beaches can yield significant benefits for turtle populations.

The Ministry’s clean-up campaign, in conjunction with Qatar University, underscores the importance of community involvement. Local engagement not only enhances awareness but also promotes collective responsibility for protecting the environment.

Recent studies emphasize the impact of clean beaches on wildlife. For instance, a 2023 study published in the journal Marine Ecology Progress Series found that cleaner nesting sites significantly improve hatching success rates for sea turtles. This emerging data reinforces the Ministry’s commitment to conservation efforts and environmental stewardship.

Experts have long recognized the relationship between clean ecosystems and successful wildlife reproduction. Engaging community members in cleanup activities is a way to foster a culture of environmental responsibility, as seen through successful initiatives worldwide.
