Transform Your Memories: How Google Photos Now Converts Standard Shots to Stunning Ultra HDR!

Ultra HDR is a new image format that’s shaking up how we see photos. Similar to HDR, Ultra HDR captures a wider range of brightness and colors, making images look more lifelike. But there’s a twist: these files also include a standard dynamic range (SDR) version. This means you can share your Ultra HDR photos with friends who don’t have the latest displays, and they’ll still look good.

In the past, converting standard images to HDR was tricky. If you wanted to enjoy the benefits of HDR, you had to take pictures in that format from the start. Now, thanks to an update from Google Photos, you can upgrade your SDR images to Ultra HDR with just a few taps.

To get started, make sure your Google Photos app is updated to version 7.24.0.747539053 or higher. Google rolls out new features on the server side, so even if your version is right, you might need to wait a bit for the Ultra HDR option to appear.

Here’s how to use it: open a photo in your app, hit the Edit button, and scroll down to Adjust. You’ll find the Ultra HDR option there—replacing the older HDR Effect. Interestingly, in testing, images edited with this feature showed “Ultra HDR” next to their size and resolution information. Plus, these images might be smaller than the originals because the added HDR data doesn’t take up as much space. If storage is a concern, it’s wise to keep the original photo as well.

This development is part of a larger trend where everyday users are given more control over their media. For instance, a recent survey from Pew Research found that over 70% of smartphone users consider photo quality very important. As technology evolves, tools that enhance this quality become more critical, and options like Ultra HDR are proof of that.
