Discover the Culinary Delights at Printemps: A Food Lover’s Guide Amid the Shopping Frenzy!

My lunch date and I were wrapping up at Le Salon Vert, a cozy café on the second floor of Printemps, the new department store on Wall Street. This place feels luxurious yet relaxed, perfect for a leisurely meal. The fresh salad, dressed with a zesty vinaigrette, and a touch of crab rémoulade made for a delightful ending to our lunch. However, she had a consultation with her new cosmetic dermatologist, so we had to signal for the check.

Printemps is quite the spectacle, designed to give a whimsical shopping experience. Opened just last month, it has 55,000 square feet of retail space, a minor size in comparison to places like Nordstrom’s flagship yet managed to capture attention with its unique decor, such as giant flowers and a playful representation of New York symbols. Not just a shopping destination, Printemps invites visitors to linger longer with its various food options and thoughtful itineraries for those wanting to enjoy a few hours or an entire day.

One highlight of Printemps is its culinary offerings. Under the direction of chef Gregory Gourdet, the food has a Caribbean flair. At Cafe Jalu, you’ll find fresh pastries baked daily, such as guava danishes and rich pain au chocolat filled with smooth vanilla cream and decadent Haitian dark chocolate. A barista eagerly shared that iced coffees can be enjoyed all around the store, even amidst high-fashion displays.

Champagne is also readily available at several spots, including the Salon Vert. Interestingly, a tiny bar tucked among the cosmetics allows shoppers to sip sparkling wine while browsing beauty products. Even in the bustling atmosphere, there’s a sense of luxury and comfort, inviting guests to enjoy every moment.

During my visit, I was pleasantly surprised to find my favorite grower-Champagne, J-M Sélèque. Despite its rarity, they serve it by the glass—though at a striking $42. It was worth the indulgence after a day of exploring the vibrant space.

In recent years, consumer shopping habits have shifted, with more people gravitating towards experiences rather than mere products. According to a 2023 survey by McKinsey & Company, 75% of shoppers seek immersive experiences when shopping, predicting that retailers with unique offerings will thrive. Printemps appears to be leaning into this tendency, transforming shopping into an experience filled with food, drink, and delightful surprises.

So if you’re near Wall Street, a visit to Printemps promises not just shopping but a feast for the senses, blending the joy of dining with the thrill of retail therapy.
