Heartfelt Tributes Pour In for Okanagan Brewery Co-Founder: Celebrating a Legacy of Craft Beer Excellence

Jakob Tobler arrived in Vernon, Canada, on July 31, 1983, with his wife Emma and their young children. They were drawn to the beauty of the lakes and mountains, and the warmth of the community. But there was one disappointment: the beer. Jakob missed the rich flavors of German-style brews.

Determined to change that, he and a local man opened Okanagan Spring Brewery just two years later. Today, it’s a beloved part of the community, producing craft beers that many enjoy. Unfortunately, Jakob passed away on April 16 at the age of 83, leaving behind a legacy in the brewing world and in the hearts of those who knew him.

Jakob’s journey didn’t start in Canada. Born on August 26, 1941, in Kunbaja, Hungary, he moved to Germany where he was introduced to the hospitality industry through his parents’ restaurant. This early experience inspired him to create spaces for people to gather and celebrate.

In the early 1970s, Jakob owned a nightclub in Dinkelscherben, Germany. The Old Man Diskothek became a vibrant hub for youth, offering a safe space to meet and dance. It was the first disco in the area, attracting people from miles around. His contribution to the community was deeply appreciated; many still recall how grateful they were to have a fun, safe place for their kids.

After years of hard work in the nightlife business, Jakob wanted a fresh start. He and Emma decided to move to Canada, seeking new opportunities. A travel agent suggested Jakob connect with Buko von Krosigk in Vernon. Upon arrival, he did not originally intend to start a brewery. Instead, he purchased a building that once housed nightspots but eventually found his way back to his passion for brewing.

Along with von Krosigk, Jakob launched Okanagan Spring Brewery. He drew from traditional Bavarian methods, offering residents a unique alternative to mainstream beer. Their first brew was a hit and marked the beginning of a craft brewing renaissance in the region.

Jakob’s dedication extended beyond his business. He was a loving family man who instilled strong values in his three sons and four grandchildren. His granddaughter, Kristina, is now pursuing a Master’s in business administration and plans to explore how beer consumption trends have changed across generations.

The community has been mourning Jakob’s passing. Social media tributes highlighted his role as a mentor and friend, with many expressing their gratitude for his impact on their lives and businesses.

Jakob is survived by Emma, his sons, and his grandchildren, who brought him immense joy. A celebration of his life is planned for May 10 at the Prestige Hotel in Vernon.

Jakob Tobler leaves behind more than just a brewery; he created a legacy of community, family, and quality craftsmanship that will be remembered for years to come.
