From Drive-In to Donation: Cedarburg’s Former Operators Launch Charity Food Truck for Families in Need

Cedarburg, Wis. — A local couple is bringing a fresh twist to community dining with their new food truck that serves burgers for a meaningful cause.

Mary Champeny and Steve Michalica, familiar faces from Wayne’s Drive-In, have shifted gears after retiring from their restaurant in 2023. They’ve launched “Mel’s on the Move,” a food truck aimed at giving back to the community.

“It’s like having a new family,” Mary said about the team of six volunteers who help run the truck.

The food truck’s profits support Mel’s Charities, with only the cost of food and fuel being deducted. Their goal for each event is to raise at least $1,000, which directly funds charitable work.

This Saturday, the truck will make its debut at Mel’s River Run, where they will serve up crowd favorites from their restaurant days, including burgers and fries. Steve expressed their commitment, saying, “We aim to feed as many people as we can.”

The couple plans to tour Ozaukee County this summer, participating in several local events each week. The joy of serving the community keeps them motivated. Mary shared, “It’s just so rewarding.”

Food trucks have seen a rise in popularity over the years, especially since the pandemic. Many entrepreneurs have turned to this flexible and mobile business model. According to a recent survey by the National Food Truck Association, there are now over 30,000 food trucks operating in the U.S., a significant increase from previous years. This growth reflects changing consumer habits and a desire for unique dining experiences.
