Auburn University and Children’s Harbor Join Forces to Support Chronically Ill Children: A New Initiative by WAKA 8

Children’s Harbor and Auburn University have joined forces to support chronically ill children. This partnership aims to enhance care and resources for these kids and their families.

The celebration took place at Children’s Harbor, a pediatric medical camp nestled on 66 acres by Lake Martin near Eclectic. This non-profit organization focuses on uplifting families dealing with severe illnesses through various support services.

Over the next few years, Children’s Harbor and Auburn University plan to launch numerous joint initiatives. More than 20 programs across all 12 of Auburn’s colleges, including the graduate school and several outreach initiatives, will be involved in this collaborative effort.

Key aspects of their agreement include internships and clinical placements for Auburn students, providing them hands-on training while they help with Children’s Harbor programs. Auburn Outreach will assist with grant writing and share university resources, while Children’s Harbor will offer collaboration opportunities.

During the celebration, Auburn students shared ideas to improve the landscaping at Children’s Harbor. One exciting part of the agreement will transform Children’s Harbor into a learning lab for landscape architecture students, allowing them to apply their skills in a practical setting.

Children’s Harbor has been serving the community by Lake Martin for 36 years and is set to host 46 camps this year. Currently, they are running a “Songs For Sight” camp, dedicated to children with visual impairments.

According to a recent survey by the American Camp Association, 75% of parents of seriously ill children report that camps significantly help in their children’s emotional and social development. This underscores the importance of organizations like Children’s Harbor, which provide vital support to families during challenging times.

Such collaborations illuminate a growing trend in community support, merging educational institutions with non-profits to create lasting impacts.
